HOW TO BUY GLASSES FOR CHILDREN

Updated: Oct 7, 2021

Are you looking forward to school? We certainly are, and we foresee big things for all the kids returning to class in September. There’s undoubtedly a bright future ahead for these young scholars! The only question is, do they share this vision?

Back to School Blues

Don’t let subpar vision hold your little one back this semester. Unfortunately, poor or declining vision affects the young and old alike. A child’s vision problems can manifest in several ways and can even affect their performance in school.

So how do you know if your child is experiencing vision problems? Well, if they’re old enough, they’ll probably tell you. Still, there are recognizable signs that will tip you off, even if your youngster is too little to express it themselves.

It may be time to visit an optometrist if your child:

  • Complains of discomfort or fatigue

  • Experiences frequent headaches

  • Often rubs or blinks their eye/s

  • Covers one eye

  • Tilts their head to the side

  • Holds reading materials close to their face

  • Has difficulty focusing

  • Struggles to retain written/drawn material

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar? If so, your little one may need an eye exam or even a pair of glasses.

School Solutions

Many schools offer a vision screening program to help their students make the most of their education. After all, if you can’t read the books or focus on the whiteboard, it’s challenging to succeed in the classroom. And while these vision screenings are a great asset to children and parents alike, it’s not quite the same as a comprehensive eye exam.

You might assume that 20/20 vision is a perfect score, but eyesight is more complicated than that. Many young students experience common conditions like farsightedness (hyperopia), nearsightedness (myopia), and astigmatism, resulting in blurry vision. A school vision screening can usually detect these issues but are much more likely to miss vision problems related to eye tracking, focusing, and coordination. Even with 20/20 vision, a child can still experience the latter conditions.
